Amanda: Biblical Interpretation

One of my favorite parts of our Christianity course this semester was the exercise we did where we paired up and discussed how we would interpret selected verses of scripture. While we went around the room in our groups explaining what we had come up with an explanation of the bible verses a lot of thoughts filled my mind and caused me to reflect on all of the information we have covered this semester.

This is the one time in the semester I can recall that we actually looked deeply into scripture ourselves rather than focusing on things other people have said and acted on after reading scripture. I really enjoyed the dialogue that was created within the class and valued the differing points of view each group brought to the table.

I thought this exercise shed a lot of light on our study of Christianity as well as Religion and art and hopefully let us all better understand the huge task we took on this semester with our studies. We took 19 verses of one chapter of one book of the bible, picked it apart and all it meant very different things to us all. I was thrilled that all of our interpretations were very different and that these differences often stemmed from taking the meaning of one or two words in diverting directions.

For me, this exercise greatly added to our discussion on religious art and the division of Christian churches. Our own differing interpretations mirror the topics of Christian reformers, the role and authority of the church, and the space between sacred and profane art we have struggled with all semester.
